Please discuss at least three "take away" ideas, questions, problems, or concerns provoked by Thursday's class discussion. Try to be specific, use examples, and explain your ideas. Refer to the blogging rubric on the classroom website for additional expectations.
Three "take-aways" from our class discussion from Thursday about All American Boys are that police are portrayed negatively in the media, news stories only portray one side of the story, and their is tension within our society because of racial differences and how people are being treated unfairly because of their skin, race, or religion.

DeleteOne of the take aways from the class conversation we had was the situation on how to stop the media or society for only looking at the negative side of police work. Like how police brutality is now one of the biggest topics from the news, but that's not the only thing police do they help people as well. Another take away from the class conversation was how the media affected people's opinions on certain topics. For example the news writes out how a white police officer killed a black man for no reason (maybe) and then everyone accepts the fact oh cops are racist and cops are bad and majority believe the news because it's the news and supposedly the news never lie. A third takeaway I took from the conversation was how we as individuals can change the media instead of accepting everything that the news writes. For example we as individuals can look more into the situation instead of just going with what the media says and what majority of citizens say just because you don't want to be that guy who has their own opinion and is looked bad of by other people, but people should stand out for their opinions because it's what they think is right.

DeleteI think that the media portrays the bad things, like police brutality and racism, as what all people would like to see. In general there is more bad then good going on in the world. It's a terrible thing that media only puts out the negativity. One problem from a teenage perspective is that the media influences us to believe that all blacks are being attacked by cops becuase they are all doing something against the law. That is not at all true. Only the people who are doing something wrong should be put against the law. Innocent people should not have to be treated like animals just becuase of the way they are thought of from law enforcement. One question I have is why does media only believe that something negative and sad will bring publicity. It is hard to believe that something like that could happen.

DeleteOne take away from the class discussion was that the media always looks at the negative side of a police. All the good stuff the police does the media never talk about it. But when the police does something bad the media is always talking about it. I think they do that because the police is always doing good stuff but they rarely do something bad. So that's why the media is talking about the bad situation. The second take away we discussed was about if the book was accurate to the current socio-political climate. I would say no when school ended last year. But from what happened over the summer it kind of relates. But I do not think the book relates to our city. The last take away was about how we believe everything the media says. An example is that when we see something in the media most of us never look into the situation. We could research the situation. But we decide not to.

DeleteI believe that our societies problems with policemen and racism is being magnified by the media. The media is constantly looking for the situations that will get them the most views and success. By doing this they make the situation worse than it is by only projecting the negative things. There are definitely some problems with the police but I do not believe that it is as bad as people portray it. They also don't show the point of view from the officer as many of them have to make split second decisions that could affect their lives forever. Lastly with the situation in Milwaukee the media decided not to mention that the police officer was black and they just focused on the victims race.

DeleteDuring the discussions I noticed 3 things that stood out to me. One topic that was interesting to me was that in most stories you never other opinions because people put too much faith in the media and news. An example is that many people believe everything the news broadcasters say when they could have incorrect information. Many are shunned or discredited because they have differing opinions from others. Another topic that stood out to me was that there is a lot of tension in the country after the events of the summer. I found this interesting because in the tension isn’t getting any better with the presidential election because the candidates are making it worse in my opinion. The final topic is that many groups of people fall under a stigma or stereotype and when people try to change their image they are met with even more hate. I find this terrible because people shouldn’t be punished for trying to change. Many people find change intimidating, even scary, so they lash out and punish other for it. This isn’t right and needs to change so people can break down stigmas and stereotypes to help people understand.

DeleteI think that the media is a terrible thing when it comes to portrail of a race or police. Then media or news automatically takes the worst of situation going on in the world and uses them because their more interesting and will get them more views. The world looks like a worse of a place than it is because of the way they show it. Also, the media really doesn't want to switch. If they did they would show all the positivity in the world or at least a mix instea of just showing the bad stuff. They just don't switch the way they do things because in there heads what they do is alright and doesn't need to switch. If they saw a problem there would already be a switch. Another problem regarding law enforcement. Police officers are often portrayed as people that just use their power against the citizens and victimize them, though it is not often seen when a citizen victimizes a polic officer. The police are stereotyped and often not given credit for all the good they do. As I understand that there are bad law enforcers but there are also some good ones to.

DeleteDuring the discussion, there were three takeaways that stood out to me. One was that the media typically focuses on the bad actions police officers have done. Although police officers have done bad things, they have also done good. The good actions of police officers are not highlighted as much as the bad actions due to the fact that the media might only want to make headlines, and the bad moments receive more attention than the good. Another takeaway was that people never hear opinions in the media because they have too much trust in it. The media could make a statement that is completely false, and people would still believe it due to their trust in the media. The final takeaway was that we, as our own individuals, can not accept what the media says by changing it. We can do more research into cases and crime scenes to find out the truth behind the headlines. A person doesn't have to agree with the headlines because everyone else agrees with them. They can do research to have their own opinion and share it with others.

DeleteI feel that the media only focuses on one side of every story. The side of the story that is focused on is always the favorited side. Most of the time it is the person committing the bad action. For example, an All-American boys on the news the only person heard is Paul. Nobody really cares about Rashad's opinion. I also feel that people are afraid to speak in the media. They're holding back to wait for others to calm down. However, there's only so much time you have to wait. I think that people should stop waiting and not be hesitant and highlight the positive things that happen instead of telling all the negative things that happen. Although the media instigates negativity intention, people can make a change for speaking up and disagreeing with others opinions. Lastly, I wanted to say that not all officers are bad. The media focuses on all the negativity that is happening in the world with officers. Because people feed off of drama and the media needs to make money, The focus on the negativity with police officers because that's what people want to watch. However, I believe that people can make a change by releasing the tension and highlighting positive things in the media. I also feel that people should release some of their trust they have with the media, because some people have too much. In conclusion, in our class discussion of these are three takeaways that's today out to me.

DeleteOne of the takeaway's I had from the conversation was people talking about what could happen to change the current situation. Many people said that the portrayal of law enforcement and African American people in the media could be more postitive. I think it was an interesting point because most things are negative, and maybe a more positive image would help with the current socio-political climate. The main reason this happens is because the media wants more views and these negative stories will help with that. Another takeaway from the conversation I found interesting was the point that many bystanders could do more to speak up during the incidents that occur. This was an interesting point because many people don't consider the bystander's point of view and what they can do to help. This was also explored in the book with the woman who was in the store with Rashad offered to testify and said she should have spoken up, which is not often explored during these incidents. The final point I took away from this conversation was the lack of people looking for the truth after hearing the media's take on the issues. This is a problem and does not help with the climate, because without diving deeper into the stories, you may not get both sides of the story, which could be vital to understanding what happens. Those are some of the takeaways I got from the conversation.

DeleteWe discussed three main takeaways on Thursday. One takeaway we discussed in class was how most of the news involving police isn't highly viewed or talked about, unless it is about police brutality. The news only shows negative actions from police officers, while it rarely shows positive actions. I believe that the media thinks police doing good is boring and less interesting than a police officer doing something wrong. Even if it seems wrong to only put corrupt actions in the news, they mostly just care about whether people will be willing to read or watch it, nothing else. Another takeaway we discussed on Thursday was the tension in society between different races and religions. I feel like other people seem to get nervous around strangers with different races, only because they hear stories where someone else with that same race did something bad. I think that shouldn't be a thing, because most of the time people become much less nervous and more casual around people of other races once they get to know them. The last takeaway was how the news usually shows just one side of a story at a time, and how people just believe and side with the news right away. I feel like most of the time people side with whichever side the news portrays as the victim/good side, once they find out more information on a story they change their mind. I think people choose sides too quickly when they first hear about a story like for example, maybe a police officer is shown to attack a teenager and people believe the teenager is the victim. But later they find out that the teenager just before attempted to rob someone, then people side with the officer instead. Although people do this all the time, I can't blame them since you have to believe what you hear on the news most of the time, especially when you know nothing else about a certain story.

DeleteDuring class we talked about police brutality and how it affected society today. We used the word tension to describe what is going on between the police and communities. We found that the media can Control the way people view each other but they are only going to show bad things because it's exciting and that's what people want to see. If the media were to show police doing good things like they usually do then it won't get them as many views. Also people are just frustrated because the police are meant to serve and protect but all people see is police causing harm to the community.
ReplyDeleteIn class for the past few days we have been discussing the novel " All American Boys" by Jason Reynolds and Brendan Kiely,in this novel the main plot is about police brutality and we've been discussing it and I have three main takeaways. The three main takeaways I have are that the media seriously affects people's opinions on these things, that people thrive towards drama, and that police brutality is a mask to a bigger problem. One takeaway I have is that the media can seriously affect people's opinions. The media can affect people's opinions so much that it might be wrong and they'll still believe them. For example, in "All American Boys" people watched the news. On the news channel they said that Rashad was guilty and Paul was just doing his job. However,if you look deeper into the evidence than what the news said you would know that Rashad was completely innocent. So, this proves that the media affects people's opinions because the information was wrong ,but the people still believe them. Another takeaway I have is that people are attracted to drama. For example in “ All American Boys” there was probably much more happy and uplifting stories than the Rashad story, but people were much more interested to that. This proves that people are attracted to drama because they could've focused on much more better stories ,but they focused on the drama. The final takeaway I have is that police brutality is just a mask for a much bigger problem. For example in “All American Boys” at the protest they read off names of black people who were killed by police brutality. This proves that police brutality is just a mask to the bigger problem because the meaning of the protest was to show that there is racism behind the attacks. And people only focus on the police brutality because they don't want to accept the real problem. So all in all, I had three takeaways and they were that the media affects people's opinions, people are attracted to drama, and that police brutality is just a mask to the real problem
